Adam Malik

Born in Lebung, South Sumatera 25 years ago, Adam Malik has travelled and lived in different cities while studying. He was a student in an Al Amin Islamic boarding school (or “Pondok Pesantren”) in Madura, East Java to finish his high school and university. Majoring in Philosophy, he managed to get a scholarship to pursue his bachelor’s degree. Nowadays, while teaching in As Sakinah, Adam is also a postgraduate Economic student at Islamic State University (UIN) Jakarta.

Adam is fluent in Arabic. He teaches As Sakinah children how to talk and converse in Arabic. Not only that, he is also very experienced in doing Indonesian martial art, Cimande. He learned it in high school and never have gotten tired of it since, in fact, he was the one who proposed to teach As Sakinah children how to jump and kick Cimande style.

“Teaching Cimande to the boys for the first time was one of my unforgettable moments with As Sakinah. The children were very happy and enthusiastic! All boys were ready… then we all heard ‘RRRRRTT!’ a big loud ripping sound. Apparently one boy’s shorts just got torn from doing the standing position! O-oh!”, he said remembering his As Sakinah experience.

He also loves spending time together with the children. The closeness and togetherness felt when we all spent time together is a very precious thing to Adam, not only in classes, but also in daily lives. “I love to see their smiles!”

One of his dreams is for As Sakinah to have its own school, because there are still many children who cannot afford to go to school. Adam wants to help them and make an affordable school. “Hopefully all teachers and supervisors, including me, will teach and work harder and with more dedication, so that As Sakinah can have and create high quality students and teachers in the future!”
